STONEWARE CLAY BODIES

KPS has been in business since 1974 with the same owners. We are essentially a family business and know what it is to make a living by doing pottery. Even if it is just a hobby, it is important not to have your clay and equipment "fight" with you. We have formulated our moist clay bodies through years of experience and customer feed back. Clay should be fun and work with you to be what you finally envision for your creations.

We never substitute ingredients, looking for a cheaper way to make clay. We buy premium ingredients because we know that you will have fewer problems. We take pride in our clay bodies and hope they enhance your creativity. We perform extensive tests, including firing through glaze completion of real pots, to ensure that we are making a consistent and qualilty product before you get it.

All KPS Raku Clays contain Kyanite to ease the thermal shock encountered in the normal raku process.

#262 KPS GRAY SPECK STONEWARE. Cones 4-8. Unique cool Greg base color with attractive fine to medium speckle. A very friendly body that is well suited to oxidation functional ware. Reduction look without the hard work. Contains manganese. Fine grog. Oxidation.

#271 WHITE HAWK STONEWARE. Cones 6-10. A companion body for KPS 217 White Stoneware. A "toothier" feeling clay that is designed for small to large work. Excellent for use in conjunction with KPS 217 for larger work. A nice plastic body that glazes very well. Pugged slightly firmer than KPS 217. Great tile clay that is warp resistant. No fire clay. 04 bisque. Porcelain grog. Oxidation, salt, wood or reduction.

#302 KPS WILD TURKEY STONEWARE. Cones 6-10. This is a warm, salmon colored clay that is recommended for functional work or handbuilding. It is very forgiving and is beginner friendly. 04 Bisque. Oxidation, light reduction, wood or salt. Fine grog.

#328 KPS BIG RED STONEWARE. Cones 4-8. A very pleasant reddish-brown stoneware capable of making very large pieces. A "toothy" body with reverse light speckling. Glazes very well, yet is attractive all by itself. Very well suited to large work, handbuilding & sculpture. Fine grog. Oxidation, light reduction. Bisque 04.

#333 KPS BLACK RAVEN STONEWARE. Cones 6-8. A true stoneware, not a basalt-type clay. Beautiful flat black color that warms with a clear glaze. Because this is a high iron colorant clay, it will not take every glaze, but is striking with minimal glazing. The glazes this clay takes will be truly spectacular, the ones that don't work, you will truly hate. Please run test tiles, it is well worth any extra effort. Marbles well with #217 White Stoneware. Very attractive dark brown at cone 04 which deepens to black at cone 6. We recommend a cone 04 bisque with slow beginning and middle stage fire. Glaze firing should be slow in beginning stages. Contains manganese. Fine grog. Oxidation.

#340 KPS SPOTTED OWL STONEWARE. Cones 6-8. In-between our KPS 216 Tan Speck and KPS 262 Gray Speck stonewares in color. It is a nice, cool tan color (taupe) with small specks in a very pleasing amount. This clay body is very suitable for functional work and glazes great. Wonderful handbuilding clay. Bisque 04. Contains granular manganese. Oxidation, light reduction.

#370 KPS KICKWHEEL KRUNCH STONEWARE. Cones 6-10. Can you say 1970? This is old school style. It is a beautiful, warm buff in electric and turns orangey, toasty in gas.
