KPS
RAKU CLAY BODIES
KPS has been in business since 1974 with the same
owners. We are essentially a family business and know what
it is to make a living by doing pottery. Even if it is just a
hobby, it is important not to have your clay and equipment "fight"
with you. We have formulated our moist clay bodies through years
of experience and customer feed back. Clay should be fun and work
with you to be what you finally envision for your creations.
We never substitute ingredients,
looking for a cheaper way to make clay. We buy premium ingredients
because we know that you will have fewer problems. We take pride
in our clay bodies and hope they enhance your creativity. We perform
extensive tests, including firing through glaze completion of
real pots, to ensure that we are making a consistent and qualilty
product before you get it.
- KPS Clays are tested and re-tested. We are vigilant about
the quality clays we produce.
- We employ only mature adults that have worked for us for
many years.
- Premium materials are used at all times.
- Ingredients are screened.
- Our clays are carefully dry mixed and water-metered.
- We use a penetrometer to test the density of each clay batch.
- We do many tests to determine plasticity while the clay is
pugging.
- Actual pots are thrown, handbuilt or sculpted from each clay.
- We use a highly respected ceramic testing firm to produce
test bars.
- KPS clays are made by potters for potters.
- KPS Clays conform to ASTM
D-4236 standards and are certified non-toxic.
All KPS Raku Clays contain Kyanite to ease the thermal
shock encountered in the normal raku process.

RAKU CLAY BODIES:
KPS RAKU CLAY.
Cones 08-10. Designed for extreme Raku thermal shock. Bisques
very white, blackens nicely in post-reduction Raku firing. It's
a fairly smooth textured, but tuff, plastic body. Makes working
in raku easy. This is the closest thing to a universal clay body.
It will work well for practically any application-low-fire to
high-fire and anything in between, plus you can count on good
glaze adhesion and fit all the way up the temperature chart. If
you only want one clay, this is the one to use. Glazes very well.
Has kyanite for thermal shock. Oxidation, reduction, wood or natural
pit firings.
KPS RAKU C.
Same properties as above but with the addition of medium coarse
grog to give ultra, industrial strength. Good for slab making,
large wheel work and handbuilding. Also excellent choice for sculpture
and large objects. Bisques white. Will fire to cone 10. Oxidation,
reduction, wood or natural pit firings.
KPS 250 SCHOOLHOUSE
RAKU. Cones 08-10. This is our smoothest
texture raku clay that really throws itself. It has the heart
of a lion and the feel of velvet. It will hang in for the long
haul and will not disappoint you. Economy and greatness all in
one. This body will vitrify from cone 6-10 and be a light cream
color in oxidation and slighty more toasty in reduction. Oxidation,
reduction, wood or natural pit firings.

for those not fussy about fired color. Only available locally,
